Google and its Android partners can thank customers in North America for the hot growth of smartphones sporting the mobile operating system.
Among all the Android devices owned around the world, 75 percent of them are in North America, according to AdMob's April Mobile Metrics Report, released Wednesday. That's followed by 11 percent owned in Western Europe and 12 percent in Asia. In contrast, 49 percent of devices running Apple's iPhone OS are in North America, with 28 percent owned in Western Europe and 14 percent in Asia.
Though consumer demand for Android has been climbing, the iPhone still commands the stronger market share, according to the April report. In the United States, iPhone OS devices held a 2-to-1 ownership ratio over Android OS devices last month; worldwide that ratio came in at 3.5 to 1. But of course, the iPhone OS has been around longer than Android.
Looking at hard numbers, AdMob tracked 8.7 million unique Android devices in the United States on its network in April, compared with 10.7 million iPhones. Factoring in the iPod Touch and iPad boosted the number of Apple devices in the U.S. to 18.3 million. Worldwide, AdMob found 11.6 million Android devices, 27.4 million iPhones, and 40.8 million total devices running the iPhone OS on its network last month.

Well this can't be tremendously surprising. Apparently American Beauty director Sam Mendes is in the process of putting together a series of commercials for Apple's next iPhone, which according to a tipster is being referred to internally as the Mammoth / N90. Besides that tip (with a handful of juicy details), a trusted source has confirmed to us that the ads will feature at least one spot where a mother and daughter are having a video chat conversation using the new front-facing camera that's been spied on the face of that iPhone floating around Vietnam and Northern California. Adding weight to this story, a cursory search on Twitter revealed that there's at least one actress who is up for a role in the "f***ing apple commercial" in New York, and another fellow who is auditioning for spots in California. We don't know much more than that, but we're fairly confident that this confirms video chat is coming to the next iPhone, and that that said iPhone isn't very far from our grasp. Remember folks, June 7th is just a kiss away.

iPad News
iPads remained in short supply in the U.S. this week ahead of next week's iPad launch in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, while Apple prepared for the upcoming rollout as it opened the iPad App Stores and populated the iBookstores of the aforementioned countries.
The company also reversed its policy of not accepting cash for iPad purchases following a publicized customer complaint, an Italian iPad surfaced online ahead of the device's official launch, and a new survey indicated that consumer demand for the iPad has risen since the device officially went on sale.
